DESHBANDHU CHITTARANJAN DAS

DESHBANDHU CHITTARANJAN DAS

Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das was a great nationalist, renowned lawyer and visionary and practical idealist and a harbinger of the revolutionary movement in the country.  He was also a believer in the concept of 'one world', an accomplished poet, and a champion of national education.  He gave a new orientation to the pre-Independence Indian politics by propagating "non-cooperation from within the Councils".  He was also a President of the Indian National Congress.  He founded the Swaraj Party along with Pandit Motilal Nehru and Lala Lajpat Rai in 1922.  He was also a renowned poet and writer and a staunch protagonist of communal harmony.

The portait, painted by Atul Bose, was unveiled by the then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad on 12 September 1958.

The portrait was donated by Dr. B.C. Roy on behalf of the people of India.
