DR. ZAKIR HUSAIN

A distinguished son of India, a great patriot, an eminent educationist and scholar, Zakir Husain enjoyed the trust and confidence of the entire nation.  He had in him wisdom, good humour, tolerance and democratic credentials, which made him popular among the public.  In the field of education, his contributions have been immeasurable and he was the Vice-Chancellor of the Jamia Millia Islamia and the Aligarh Muslim University.  He was a member of the Rajya Sabha and Governor of Bihar, before he became the Vice-President of India and ex officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, an office he held from 13 May 1962 to 12 May 1967.  He was the President of the Republic from 13 May 1967 till 3 May 1969 when he died in office.
