LAL BAHADUR SHASTRI

LAL BAHADUR SHASTRI

An illustrious son of India, a 'valiant freedom fighter, an unflinching patriot, an embodiment of selflessness and honesty and a symbol of simplicity and integrity, Lal Bahadur Shastri was indeed an epitome of all that is best in the Indian culture.  A man of deep and genuine humility, he worked ceaselessly and spent his lifetime till the last minute for the cause of the nation.  His affable nature, mental equanimity and transparent love for the country endeared him universally.  Before becoming the Prime Minister, he was a Minister in Uttar Pradesh and later a Union Minister in Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's Cabinet.  As Prime Minister, he gave the nation the stirring slogan, jai jawan jai Kisan and he awakened the power of the people.  He laid utmost stress on strengthening the defence of the country and in honouring the man behind the plough.

The portrait, painted by Vidya Bhushan, was unveiled by the then President of India, Dr. Shanker Dayal Sharma on 2 October 1993.

The portrait was donated by the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Memorial Trust.
