PANDIT MOTILAL NEHRU

PANDIT MOTILAL NEHRU

On entering the Parliament House Estate from the Sansad Marg side, one can see from a distance across the lawns on the left side, a 3.75 metre high bronze statue of Pandit Motilal Nehru.  He was a great statesman, an acknowledged legal luminary, an eloquent speaker, a dedicated freedom fighter and a great parliamentarian, who left an indelible mark of his brilliance, oratory and parliamentary skill in the Central Legislative Assembly.  He founded the Swaraj Party along with C.R. Das within the Congress.  Twice elected President of the Indian National Congress, he was also the first Leader of the Opposition in the Central Legislative Assembly.  Motilal Nehru had a rational, rob-List, secular and fearless outlook on life, and was one of the most notable and outstanding figures of Indian nationalism.

The statue, fixed on a sand-stone pedestal, was sculpted by D.P. Roychowdhury.  It was unveiled by the then President of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan on 6 May 1963.

The statue was donated by the Motilal Nehru Centenary Committee.
