R.K. SHANMUKHAM CHETTY

A discerning economist, an experienced administrator, a reputed speaker and an ardent student of Tamil literature, R.K. Shanmukham Chetty advocated national progress through constitutional means. He functioned as the Chief Whip of the Swarajya Party for sometime. He was a member of the Central Legislative Assembly (1923-31), its Deputy President during 1931-33 and its President during 193334. He was the Indian delegate to the Assembly of the League of Nations in Geneva in 1938 and the World Monetary Conference at Bretton Woods in 1944. He was Constitutional Adviser to the Chamber of Princes in 1945. A member of the Constituent Assembly, he was the first Finance Minister of Independent India during 1947-48.  During 1952-53, he was a member of the Madras Legislative Council.
