A lady of extraordinary courage, an inspired orator, a great poetess and author, a reputed administrator and eminent national leader, Sarojini Naidu was popularly called the 'Nightingale of India.' She was the symbol of the sufferings and sacrifices of the women of India in the national struggle and was loved and respected by all sections of people.  A close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, she was the first lady to be elected the President of the Indian National Congress (in 1925) and later the first lady to be appointed Governor (of Uttar Pradesh).

The portrait, painted by Chintamani Kar, was unveiled by the then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad on 16 December 1959.

The portrait was donated by the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
