DR. SHANKER DAYAL SHARMA

A veteran freedom fighter, prominent public figure and distinguished parliamentarian, Shanker Dayal Sharma played a notable role in India's political life.  He was a member of the Bhopal Legislative Assembly and later the Chief Minister of Bhopal State.  Subsequently, he became a member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly and a Minister in the State.  He was a member of the Lok Sabha and a Union Minister.  He was also President of the Indian National Congress.  Shanker Dayal Sharma occupied the office of the Governor in Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Maharashtra.  A writer of repute and a renowned orator, he was the Vice-President of India and ex officio Chairman Rajya Sabha from 3 September 1987 to 24 July 1992.  He was the President of India from 25 July 1992 till 24 July 1997.
